Ten Hag has yet to resolve Manchester United's midfield problem in pre-season -Says Gary Neville

Manchester United suffered their first defeat of 2024 on Saturday afternoon, losing 2-1 to Fulham at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville believes Erik ten Hag has yet to solve the midfield problems that were prevalent during pre-season.

The Reds suffered their first defeat of 2024 on Saturday afternoon when Fulham's Alex Iwobi scored a late blow to beat the Ten Hag side 2-1. United may be feeling frustrated, but for the majority of the game the visitors were in the lead.

Throughout the match, Marco Silva's side fed passes through the midfield to Casemiro and Coby Mane as United struggled to contain the Londoners. Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football show, former Premier League defenders Jamie Carragher and Gael Clichy analyzed the results and identified mistakes in midfield.

Reflecting on their comments, Neville explained how the problem worsened over the course of the season. "I remember the first Monday night game of the season against Wolves, Casemiro was in midfield and Mount and Fernandes were up front," he began.

“The space around Casemiro in midfield was great. This was seen during preseason practices and even in some preseason games.

"What Gael (Chrissy) and Carla showed us happened over and over again for seven, eight, nine months and they couldn't change it. Obviously, Erik ten Hag will be judged on his performance at the end of the season, with Champions League qualification being important.

"But I think there is a demand for a standard of play and a feeling that the club is moving in the right direction on the pitch. Fans or not, no one watches Manchester United play, no one knows what Manchester United are going to do every week and that's the problem.
